I've been watching a lot of science shows discussing and debating this question.
I have only one question: Why don't they just look around our world--both near and far--and throughout our universe? Nature did not create just one of anything. Nature is extremely redundant. Just the fact that they can categorize everything they discover and learn of should convince them that each time they find something new, they find many others. Enough so that they can then create a category for that find.
Our astrophysicists, geophysicists, and biophysicists are focusing only on what they know of here on our very tiny world. They have nearly convinced themselves that our world is unique, that we are a "special" happenstance. REALLY?
Our scientists are only looking for life that could survive on Earth or in some way be just like us and our other earthly life forms. Have they not yet learned from all of the extremophiles they continue to find? Life forms that continue to thrive without water, light, oxygen, heat or cold, in chemicals and minerals they believed would be poisonous to life? Why do they insist on searching for life that mimics us and the average mammalian life on Earth?
To be considered "intelligent", must a life form think and communicate as we do? Are we not learning that many life forms on Earth do indeed communicate and think among their own species? Because their manner of communication differs from ours and because we do not understand them, does that mean they are not intelligent?
I say resoundingly: OF COURSE NOT! I say they are intelligent enough to survive successfully in their very dangerous environments...and they do it without destroying their environments. Unlike the human species. We may be "intelligent" enough to create things to increase our enjoyment and comfort but we have not yet learned to do it WITHOUT destroying the very things we need to continue to survive; specifically our food sources, our oxygen sources, our soil, our air.
So, who are the intelligent beings on planet Earth?
No Pollyana
My personal opinions on matters that I consider important to me and to those people and things I care about. Specifically, I am concerned about the future my descendants will face. I may occasionally comment on my views on religion. To me, Religion is: Belief in and reverence for a "super natural" power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe.

No Mystery
Our world will surely end if we, the self-proclaimed superior species on our planet, do not drastically face the truth about ourselves and dedicate ourselves to making some very major changes.
Our very nature is to be extremely voracious. We call it self-preservation and progress and so many more words we created to excuse our actions and avoid facing the truth about ourselves.
We are voracious consummate consumers...of everything. We have convinced ourselves that the things we desire are necessary when, in actuality, most of what we want are luxuries and not necessary to our life or our survival. We've convinced ourselves that we deserve it or that it is our inherent right to have all we desire.
We've lost track of what is really important. Keeping our planet healthy should be at the top of every person's list of things to do. Everything else falls below this. Without our planet, we are literally nothing--we cease to exist because we cannot exist on an unhealthy planet, a planet with toxic air, little fresh water, little food, no wildlife, no jungles and forests, not enough space for everyone, not enough housing for everyone.
All the immediate problems that are possible to end our existence are and will be a direct result of our irresponsibility and screwed-up priorities. In particular, the belief that having children is every person's divine right. IT IS NOT OUR DIVINE RIGHT. Having children is a serious responsibility and a privilege which we have abused and continue to abuse. By having too many children without thought of the dire consequences, we condemn ourselves to extinction.
This is a fact; not an opinion.
We are literally consuming ourselves out of house and home. It's like setting our homes on fire while we sit in the living room playing video games and eating steaks while we tell ourselves, "Not to worry; the firemen will be here to put out the fire." This is NeverNeverLand thinking.
As our population keeps growing, the pollution we create will cause climate change to happen faster, food and fresh water will be depleted more quickly, ever more wildlife and forests will be lost to make room for more humans. As resources are depleted faster and faster, violence will escalate to a horrific level.
And through all our trials and tribulations, we'll continue to hurry on our path of destruction by continuing to have more babies. No matter how destructive and desolate our world becomes, we will continue to have more babies even when there is barely enough food and water and space for the people who are already here.
We are a very sad species. We do what feels good even when it isn't right or beneficial.
We are a destructive species. We find a beautiful spot to live in. We move in. We begin to change that beautiful spot into an ugly polluted place filled with people, buildings, vehicles. We destroy everything natural and build unnatural structures to please ourselves. We should be keeping the environment as natural as possible. We should not be overwhelming and destroying nature with the weight of humanity. The natural world, the world as it was, is the reason humanity was able to flourish.
Every day, everything we do destroys more of the natural world. The natural world is what we need above all else to survive. We have not yet learned to truly appreciate this fact, to respect it, and to cherish it. The very thing we need to survive, we are destroying.
WE ARE COMMITTING SUICIDE, GENOCIDE. We are bringing about the end of humanity.
If we control our population growth and lower our total population worldwide, we give our planet a chance to heal from the damage we've done so far. If we do this one thing, we can insure the future of our species. This is the One Sure Thing we can do that's within our power to do. We can begin immediately and it won't cost us a penny. This one thing is something every person on this planet can do.
We just have to want to do it. We have to admit that we need to do it.
Or are we too selfish? Too weak? Too irresponsible? Too blind?
I don't believe that no one else sees this as clearly as I do. But it's something that everyone needs to see and admit. It's the only way to save our planet and our future as a species. If we do this, we can give us a chance and the time to undo all the damage we've done so far.
How about you? Do you have the courage, the intelligence, and the desire to save humanity and our world?

To save our world for the children we already have...
The First and Foremost thing we must do is to Mandate Birth Control Worldwide. If we don't, Nothing we do in any other area will be effective. And we MUST do this immediately. We must change our way of thinking. Children are not our Future or our Hope for the Future. Not the way we're doing it.
Without Mandatory Birth Control Worldwide, we are guaranteeing the death of a future for the children we already have today.
No matter how much effort we put into alternative resources, water preservation, food rationing, all efforts will fail...if we fail to Mandate Birth Control Worldwide.
So, what are we doing about it? Absolutely Nothing.
Instead, we focus on alternative energy. We talk about it a lot but do very little. We are unable to do without the overuse of energy in everything we do every day. We are unwilling to make major changes in our lifestyle. In fact, we assuage our overindulgence with tiny, ineffective changes such as CFBs, a few hybrid vehicles, and miniscule efforts to use solar and wind energy.
In the larger countries, everyone overindulges on everything. We are all too focused on the advances in electronics. Everyone wants a computer, cell phone, video games, computerized vehicles and homes. Even governments, large and small corporations and businesses depend heavily on electronics to run and maintain their business. Every aspect of our every day lives depend on electronics to take us through our days. Our military depend very heavily on electronics. Law Enforcement, Medical, Educational, and the Legal Systems all depend heavily on electronics to function. We all want as much of the electronic advances as fast as they can be produced.
We are more focused on electronics than in saving our world for future human generations. Even scientists and politicians all say we need to make major changes...not now but in the future. They are afraid to say we need to do it NOW...not tomorrow...not 10, 20, 50 years from now.
I say we are approaching the point of no return in these next few years. It's now.
The larger our worldwide population grows, the faster it grows. Our planet CANNOT keep pace in providing what we need to keep our world viable and give our children a chance for a future while we irresponsibly and unthinkingly continue to add to our population.
Mileposts to our future destruction are everywhere. Rising prices for everything we need--food, water, fuel, housing, education, clothing, medical services. The need for more prisons, just plain more of everything!
The foundation of every problem we have today and will have in the future is the world's ever-burgeoning and uncontrolled population growth. And yet, there is not a single entity in the governments of the world, no religious leader, no scientist, no educator, no parent who has the courage to say: WE MUST CONTROL THE WORLD'S POPULATION GROWTH...AND WE MUST DO IT TODAY.
Ideally, we must bring the worldwide population down to manageable and sustainable numbers. What number is that? Scientists say our world can comfortably support no more than 4 billion people. Where are we today? We are at nearly 7 billion! Almost twice what our world can support easily. We still have food and water and energy but each year, we consume more than the year before because the population is larger than the year before and growing exponentially while our resources diminish as fast as our population can consume them.
So, come on, people. Why is no one willing to give up the luxury of having so many babies? Do we love the children we have so little that we have more babies to take away the resources our children need to survive? Why is everyone so selfish?
If you really love your children, you will have no more. Instead, you will fight for Mandatory Birth Control Worldwide...beginning in our own back yard, in our own homes, in our own families, in our own country.
That is the only way to prove that we love our children and we want a viable home and future for them. Not doing it today is guaranteeing that our children will have a terrible future.
We are a selfish race. We refuse to see or admit what we're doing wrong. We don't have the courage to admit what must be done and the stamina and determination to do it...NOW.

Have you noticed...?
Have you noticed how many shows on TV address all of the doomsday prophecies? Water, food, energy, economy, climate change, meteor/comet impacts, solar flares and CMEs? "Experts" in all fields have their own theories of which is the most imminent problem for the human race.
NO ONE addresses the foundation of every problem and dire circumstance we currently face...uncontrolled population growth. If this particular problem, and it IS a problem, is not addressed, nothing anyone does in trying to solve all the other problems...will be successful.
It is the uncontrolled human population growth that IS at the base of every problem our world faces today. Humans consume too much of everything too fast. Natural resources are being consumed too quickly and in ever growing quantities. The replenishment of the planet's resources cannot keep up with the demands imposed by our burgeoning population.
The first problem that every country everywhere on our planet needs to address and resolve is to cut our population numbers at least by HALF--IMMEDIATELY. That alone would give us more time to address all of our other problems...economics, water shortages, food shortages, energy shortages, climate control.
We see that in the animal populations. When their populations begin to exceed the resources needed to sustain them, we humans "humanely" order legalized hunts to lower the animal population. But, when the problem is our own over-population, we refuse to see it and address it.
My final opinion? The human race is committing Genocide by our extremely irresponsible breeding mores. No one wants to admit it. No one wants to believe it. No one wants to do anything about it.
So, we'll continue with our current suicidal practices.
If this particular problem is not addressed and resolved, there is no need to try to solve any of the other problems because those problems will only worsen. Those problems are unsolvable if we do nothing about the irresponsible growth of the human population.
THERE ARE JUST WAY TOO MANY HUMANS ON PLANET EARTH.

Life Elsewhere in the Galaxy?
I believe there ARE a lot of life, both intelligent and emerging intelligent life forms, within our Milky Way Galaxy. Will we find them? Not in many of our lifetimes. The distances involved and our own extremely short lifespan as a species preclude finding other life intelligent lifeforms.
I hope our species DOESN'T find other worlds out there in the future that are "close" enough for us to contact or visit them. Why do I say this? Because I believe it would not be good for other lifeforms to be "discovered" by humans. I believe we would be anathema to other worlds, taking our violence, greed, and diseases to them. We would garner the reputation of being Destroyers of Life and Worlds.
Just as we're destroying life and our own world today. We have not changed since we began walking on two feet and realized we had a thinking brain. From the very beginning, we have tried countless times (and still continue to do so) to destroy others of our own species. In the process, we are quickly destroying our world.
Oh, we won't destroy the Earth completely. We'll just destroy what we need to survive on Earth. We breed like voracious viruses; multiplying with extreme speed and destroying everything we touch. Like cancer cells, we spread and destroy healthy cells of our world. We're killing our world and ourselves. We're overwhelming all other lifeforms on Earth.
Our "intelligence" is nowhere to be seen. We use our "intelligence" for "progress" that ensures our pursuit of physical pleasure and material goods. We breed without thought and without responsibility. Our world today is having a difficult time providing food for all. As our human population continues to increase exponentially, we'll have less and less food and water. Earth just doesn't have enough natural resources to feed and support our ever-growing population. We are literally breeding ourselves out of existence.
We believe, or want to believe, that finding another world is our only solution. That's because we don't want to take the responsibility and do what needs to be done to maintain our world to continue to be viable for our own existence. It's too much hard work. It's more glamorous and exciting to think of "conquering" other worlds to which we can move our human population overflow. We don't want to even consider population control...even to save our lives and the lives of our children. Instead, we would rather just move the overflowing human race to other worlds until that world, too, is destroyed.
In our "expansion", I hope we don't cross paths with other lifeforms. Our presence would be the end of them. We would take our violence, greed, diseases, and selfishness wherever we go.
Just as the Europeans killed a lot of the native peoples of The Americas with their diseases, greed, violence, and selfishness, we would continue the destruction wherever we go.
It's Human Nature's strongest traits. Love, generosity, compassion, and responsibility are not traits that humans have in abundance. We have only enough of those traits to convince ourselves that we're worthy of life. We've brainwashed ourselves so completely to excuse our destructive behavior. We've done this by creating words and ideas such as Progress, Imminent Domain, Manifest Destiny, Freedom, Equality. These are the excuses we always fall on when we want to go to war and kill as many other humans as we can and help ourselves to whatever goods we can obtain. We make heroes of the people who kill the most people in war. Their names and the names of Leaders of Nations who proclaim and go to war are entered into the history books. Our human history is littered and punctuated by the wars and battles we've engaged in.
We find more reasons to go to war than we can think of reasons why we shouldn't have wars. As a species, we don't want Peace. To have peace, everyone must have enough of what each person needs to survive comfortably and safely. To have peace, everyone needs to be equal. Humans cannot tolerate Equality. As nations and as individuals, we all want to believe we're better than the other nations and everyone else. We humans DO NOT and CANNOT be happy and content to be equal in all things. We each want more and better of everything than everyone else has.
So, No, I don't want humans to find other lifeforms anywhere. Here on Earth, when we find new lifeforms and new lands that are beautiful or exciting, we immediately begin to kill or destroy them. Looks at our cities and towns. We've moved into beautiful natural areas and turned them all into ugly, smelly, noisey concrete and asphalt habitats that are unhealthy for any lifeforms.
We are extremely voracious in our consumption of all natural resources and refuse to see it as a problem stemming from our greed, overpopulation, and irresponsibility in all important and vital areas necessary for life on Earth.
Humans should not be allowed to spread out and contaminate other worlds. We should just remain on Earth until we've committed genocide deriving from our own thoughtless and selfish actions.

Big Brain...No Smarts
Very apt description of the human species. Throughout our entire existence, we have been trying endlessly and relentlessly to eradicate as many humans as we can. Our brains enable us to justify our killings. We've created words such as freedom, justice, manifest destiny, and so many more...as our justification for more killings. In reality, we kill for want of power...over every other living thing. Because we don't kill only humans, we will kill any life form if it will benefit us by providing us more power, more wealth, entertainment, status.
We do not, have not, will not learn from the past. We continue and will continue through our entire existence to make war, commit violence. What our brains enable us to do is to create more efficient weapons of death. We call this progress. Today, we can kill many many more people and animals with less effort much quicker and without being bloodied or even seeing the devastation we do. We will continue to create ever more efficient weapons of death to do our killings for us.
We even created religion to manipulate and control masses of people and to further justify our acts of violence and greed. Churches and religious leaders have become extremely wealthy and powerful on every continent and throughout human history. Millions and millions of people have died as a result of religious beliefs and they continue to die today. It will never end. It's one of the strongest justifications to declare war.
Throughout all of this progress, we continue to destroy our very world--we continue to destroy everything we need in order to survive. We profess love for our "children" but we have too many children too irresponsibly. We are literally screwing ourselves out of existence. At the very least, we are doing our damnedest to do that.
World leaders and scientists believe the solution to a hopelessly overcrowded world with rapidly diminishing resources and quality of life is to spread to other worlds. Yes, if we succeed, we WILL spread our disease of violence and greed as far as we can go.
Homo sapiens are the ultimate cancer of all living things. We are the cancer for which there is no cure.
Why not? Because we thrive on violence and we're learning to commit violence from a distance through weapons of death. We NEED war. Without war, how would countries and leaders become Great? How would they acquire unimaginable wealth and power...as countries and as individuals? Where would our heroes come from?
Civilizations of the past whom we consider "great" were the civilizations that murdered and plundered and garnered the greatest wealth the most. Becoming "civilized" enabled peoples and nations to spread their violence and greed throughout the world...to every continent and island they could find. We call this progress. We are proud of our collective history of violence.
We, as a species, do not want peace. We do not want everyone to be equal everywhere. Each of us, as nations and as individuals, have an innate desire to be better than the person next to us...even in our own families. We find reasons to be better: color, nations, religion, appearance. When we say we need to reach our full potential, what we're really saying is "we need to be better than anyone else in whatever it is we choose to do."
No one anywhere wants to be mediocre or peaceful. Where is the glory in that? Where are the rewards? How will we stand out in a crowd...especially as our world becomes ever more crowded with the likes of us?
All you need to do is look at our entertainmers and our civil and military leaders. Look at the reality shows filled with commonplace people willing to make asses of themselves for a few weeks of "fame" and proclaiming "I exist, I am here, I am not invisible, I'm important."
Humans DO NOT WANT PEACE. They like to talk about it, especially if it elevates them above everyone around them. But just really think about it. How bored would ALL of us be if everyone were equal, if we didn't always want to be better than everyone else in some area of our lives...if everyone had a safe place to live and enough food to eat. We'd find something, anything to make ourselves rise above everyone else. We want to compete for everything, we want to have more than the next person, we want to stand out from the crowd. We don't want to be lost in a crowd of happy, peaceful people who don't want anything from us. We would have no heroes, no idols, no one to envy, no reason to live.
Humans thrive on violence and greed. Greed drives our endeavors. Violence gives us a way to fulfill our desire for ever more of everything. We'll use religion and freedom to justify all of our actions. If necessary, we will also invent and create more reasons to justify the violence, destruction, and devastation we do to our species, our world. And if we find the way, we will spread our cancerous species as far out and away from Earth as we can go. If our species survive millions of years of existence, we will still be doing what we're doing today, what we've done throughout our existence. We will still continue to do our best to eradicate the human race and every other life forms who have the misfortune of crossing our path and making us aware of them.
Armageddon is not a place...or an event. Armageddon is us, homo sapiens, people of planet Earth.
We even created a god in our own image to justify so many of our own acts of violence. But that's fodder for another blog entry.

Are Our Children the Hope for Mankind's Future?
Many people believe so. Others are absolutely convinced. And then, there are those who believe as I do--our children could be our hope for the future of mankind...but NOT the way we're doing it.
The people in the first 2 groups also don't really believe mankind's future is at stake by our actions today. They blindly believe we can continue going on and doing as we've been doing...because Our Children will save mankind.
The third group believe we are exploding our population so much that we could very well be condemning our children to future extreme food shortages among many other things we'll be depriving them of. Things such as water, fuel, privacy, and...space.
There are many areas around the world that are presently experiencing hunger and drought and genocide. There are countries such as the USA who send food and medicines and in some cases, soldiers to help those countries in need. But, as food availability begin to get scarce, our aid to other countries will stop...to feed our own citizens. Then our own country will experience hunger and severe drought.
Simply put, people, there will be so many of us, there is just no way there will be enough food for everyone. There will be so many of us, we'll be living elbow to elbow everywhere. There will be so many of us, what resources we have now will quickly dwindle to nothing.
This is the future for our children.
The first and foremost action we must take is NOT to find alternative energy sources, it's NOT to grow more food, it's NOT to build more schools and hospitals.
THE FIRST AND FOREMOST ACTION WE MUST TAKE WITHOUT HESITATION IS TO SEVERELY CONTROL OUR WORLD POPULATION GROWTH. We MUST bring our population down to a manageable size, we MUST bring our population down to what our resources can provide for survival.
As our world becomes ever more crowded, crimes will increase exponentially. People will begin to hoard. People will begin to take from their neighbors. It will be an ugly world for our children and their children.
If you really think about it, you will see that every single problem we're experiencing today and will experience tomorrow even more severely...every problem stems from our ever burgeoning population.
You hear it everywhere every day. Not enough funds for more teachers, schools, law enforcement, hospitals, and everything else we need for a quality life. As our population continues to grow, we also need more roads, more housing, more water, more food, more prisons. As our population grows, we need ever more of Everything!
But we are not controlling our birth rate and we are not teaching our children to control their birth rate.
The Bottom Line: Unless we willingly begin to accept our own responsibility for increasing our world population, there will come a day when controlling the world's population growth will be mandatory. When that day arrives, it will be way too late to do much good. By that day, our world will have been ravaged for too long.
Climate change, shortages of all resources, and loss of privacy will be the direct result of the actions of each of us today. Our world will not be a beautiful world again until humans are long gone. It will take our beautiful world thousands of years to recover from our having existed. Thousands of years to erase all traces of mankind.
This is the legacy we are leaving to our future generations. They will be the ones to witness the end of mankind. Their last thoughts of us will not be nice or kind. Their very last thought will be, "Why?"
